andy Bartle Finocchi, Senior Academic Officer at Carnegie Learning, ensures that the best of academic research on teaching and learning theory is directly applied to the needs of teachers. Sandy joined Carnegie Learning in August 2000 after spending 14 years as a high school mathematics teacher, department chair, and coach. She began her career at Carnegie Learning as Manager of School Partnerships, where she used her background in mathematics education and curriculum to inform and educate teachers on the benefits of using the Carnegie Learning materials in their classroom.

ALMARODE ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
J
ohn began his career in Augusta County, Virginia, teaching a wide-range of students. His research interests include educational neuroscience, the design and measurement of classroom environments that promote student engagement and learning, interest and engagement in STEM disciplines, specialized STEM high schools, and college and university laboratory schools. The work of John and his colleagues has been presented to the United States Congress, Virginia Senate, at the United States Department of Education as well as the Office of Science and Technology Policy, the White House. John has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on the application of neuroscience to classroom, school, and home environments. He has authored multiple journal articles, reports, book chapters, and two books including Captivate, Activate, and Invigorate the Student Brain in Science and Math, Grades 6–12 (Corwin Press, 2013). I
rene is the Deputy Executive Director for Detroit Public Schools (DPS), Office of Mathematics Education and the President of the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM). She has held several roles in education over the years and has observed hundreds of mathematics classrooms from kindergarten to grade 12. She is a former president of the Detroit Area Council for Teachers of Mathematics and has taught at Wayne State University and Wayne County Community College. After one year as Deputy Executive Director for DPS, district mathematics achievement increased across all grades. As MCTM President representing 14 regions through the Great Lakes State, Irene was requested by the Michigan Department of Education and State Superintendent Flanagan to give testimony in both Michigan Legislative Houses on the Common Core State Standards in 2013.

Experience a Carnegie Learning demonstration lesson as a student to build an understanding of what a Carnegie Learning classroom should look like, sound like, and feel like. Then put on your teacher hat to debrief the role of the facilitator during the lesson, the observed teacher moves, and the potential impact on student learning.

From Snorkelers to Scuba Divers: The Role of Feedback in Fostering Deep Thinking Students
“Is this going to be on the test?” “Why do we have to know this?” “Is this for a grade?” “Can you tell me what I need to do to get this right?” These questions haunt each and every teacher that is on the receiving end of such inquiries. When teachers use effective feedback that fosters and nurtures engagement, questions like these evaporate from our schools and classrooms while our students deep dive into learning. This workshop shows you how! You will experience targeted and specific strategies for using feedback to find the right level of rigor, striking the ideal balance between surface and deep learning, and identifying the perfect level of challenge for each student. You will also take part in an out-of-your-seat experience that models these principles for deep thinking and understanding.
The Truth About Mathematical Modeling
Ask anyone what it means to model with mathematics and you will get different responses each time. As we look at a set of K–12 modeling activities that spark deeper understanding of math, we uncover what it means to meet the demands of Math Practice 4 (model with mathematics) and how to support students as they develop the ability to model with mathematics.

What can we do to facilitate the development of skills and characteristics needed for student collaboration? We answer these questions, and more, as we look at activities and routines that help set the foundation for the student-centered, collaborative classroom environment.
The Math Leader’s Domains of Responsibility
School principals and other school and district leaders face enormous challenges in the realm of elementary, middle, and high school mathematics. The issues teachers face today in providing high-quality mathematics programs are not trivial. This session explores the four core components of math programs that are at the heart of ensuring program quality and producing high levels of student achievement.
Tools for Teaching and Learning: Teacher Clarity
This breakout session unpacks what is meant by teacher clarity. Take an in-depth look at how to make learning visible to each and every student in the classroom. This action-packed, edge-of-your-seat workshop builds understanding of the relationship between teacher clarity and student learning in my classroom. This workshop addresses classroom and student engagement in a cognitively rich environment making sure that students remain engaged in relevant content, regardless of the medium. Come learn about the mindset research from Dr. Carol Dweck and see what all the buzz is about! Take part in discussions around the view of both fixed and growth mindsets in order to make connections between mindset and student success in mathematics. Looking Around the Corner at Carnegie Learning’s Next Release
Carnegie Learning is revising the Middle School Math Series to be released for the 2017–18 school year. Spend time collaborating with the Instructional Design Team to discuss the reorganization of the content and experience a few of the new lessons. Explore the Cognitive Tutor/MATHia course content and leave with an understanding of how to navigate the software from a student’s perspective, a knowledge of the key features of the software, and the ability to create an effective Carnegie Learning lab. Creating a Community of Collaborators: Activities and Routines to Promote Student Collaboration
What does it mean to collaborate? How can we help students see the importance of collaboration? What can we do to facilitate the development of skills and characteristics needed for student collaboration? We answer these questions, and more, as we look at activities and routines that help set the foundation for the student-centered, collaborative classroom environment.
Tasks Worth Teaching, Tests Worth Taking
Interested in learning more about the National Common Core Assessments? NCTM’s Principles to Actions calls for teachers to “implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving.” In this session, we identify problem solving and reasoning in Smarter Balanced and PARCC released items. We explore ways to utilize the Carnegie Learning resources to draw out similar practices.
How Would YOU Measure That?
Measurement is often difficult for young children because they do not have a sense of what measures mean. Come experience activities designed to help students develop their own sense of length and the value of standard tools for measuring length.

Literacy in the Math Class: Deepening Mathematical Understanding through Reading, Reasoning, and Writing
The way students are being asked to interact with math content is encompassed in context rich scenarios that relate to the real world surrounding them. To access this content, students need to engage in reading and writing at levels they have never before experienced in a math class. This session focuses on various reading and writing strategies that help students develop a greater depth of knowledge and engage in the Standards for Mathematical Practice, providing teachers with opportunities for formative assessment.

Come and explore the world of categorical data. Determine, compare, and contrast various measures of center and variability in a kid-friendly way, and leave you with ideas on how to incorporate them in your classroom.

Join us as we explore a variety of resources and ideas to help support your Carnegie Learning implementation outside of the classroom. Learn how to effectively communicate with parents and help them to support their children with homework and the Cognitive Tutor/MATHia Software. Additionally, discover how to implement home connection workshops, Family Math Nights, and more.
Why Ask? The Importance of Questions in the Classroom
The most important tool we have as teachers is the questions we ask our students on a daily basis. Join us for a demonstration lesson littered with questioning techniques that can be used to create a class culture rich with student to student collaboration and engagement. Leave with an understanding of the importance of high order questioning in order to promote conceptual understanding, categorize, and analyze types of probing questions, and create and plan questions to use in your own classroom.
It’s All About the SMPs: The What and the How
Take part in an analysis of the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs). Collaboratively create a list of observable factors for each practice from student and teacher perspectives and use those lists to identify the SMPs in action through video analysis.

Teacher’s Toolkit 2.0: Using Data Reports in a Meaningful Way
Do you wonder if you’re really getting the most out of your Carnegie Learning data? This workshop gives you the opportunity to dig deeper into your Teacher’s Toolkit reports in order to maximize student efficiency and progress. Deepen your understanding of how to effectively use the data from specific reports to differentiate instruction and promote student engagement. This session is for individuals who have used the Cognitive Tutor and/or MATHia Software for at least one year and are at least familiar with the Teacher’s Toolkit reports.
Simulate This! Probability Activities for Middle School Students
Come learn about and conduct simulation activities that you can use with your middle school students! Learn to use everyday materials that you have available in your classroom to build understanding of the value of simulation and how to use appropriate tools to meet the standards.

Samine works as a Project Manager providing professional development in Miami-Dade County. Prior to joining Carnegie Learning, she spent six years as a Secondary Mathematics Teacher, Mathematics Department Chair, and Mathematics Instructional Coach. Part of her daily routine as a Mathematics Coach was to provide instructional support to mathematics teachers in the development of collaborative learning environments centered on conceptual understanding.
Prior to joining Carnegie Learning in 2015, Lemario was a Secondary Mathematics teacher at one of the 49 iPrep Middle Schools in Miami-Dade County. He has also served as a Curriculum Leader, Department Chairperson, and mentor teacher. Lemario currently works with the Miami-Dade School District as a Co-Project Manager where he supports 49 middle schools with the implementation of Carnegie Learning curricula.

Before joining Carnegie Learning full time in 2011, Kasey taught middle and high school mathematics for eight years and served as a Mathematics Consultant and coach for the largest Educational Cooperative in Kentucky. As Sr. Director of Ed Services, Kasey is responsible for ensuring and expanding the superb work of our Professional Development staff in schools and districts across the country, from design to implementation to evaluation.
Sami is a master facilitator and has tremendous mathematics experience stemming from work as a secondary mathematics teacher, Math Instructional Coach, District Level Secondary Mathematics Specialist and Senior Program Coordinator at the University of Texas at Austin’s Charles A. Dana Center. She has managed professional development projects for large districts and education agencies including Dallas ISD and the Texas Education Agency. Sami speaks frequently at regional and national math conferences including CAMT and NCTM but her primary role at Carnegie Learning is managing and facilitating high-level professional learning opportunities, promoting implementation fidelity and increasing teacher effectiveness across the United States.

Jessica joined Carnegie Learning in July 2012 after spending seven years as a teacher, Reading First instructor, and Title I and Intervention coordinator. Working in compliance with federal program requirements, Jessica used a variety of assessments, observations, and data to identify areas in need of improvement and guide reform, assisting in schoolwide improvement. In her current role, Jessica works with schools utilizing the Carnegie Learning School Improvement and Innovation Model to guide and ensure a successful implementation of math curricula and best practices leading to increased student achievement.
Kelly joined Carnegie Learning in May 2012. Prior to arriving, she taught for two years at Kennesaw State University in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, focusing on pre-service teacher content knowledge, standards implementation, and reflective teaching practices. During graduate school, she worked for the University of Georgia and the Georgia Department of Education. Before this, she taught high school mathematics for eight years in Gwinnet County, GA. At Carnegie Learning, Kelly has worked as a Manager of School Partnerships and now works on the Curriculum Development team.

Sarah began her career teaching high school mathematics in Anaheim, CA. While still a classroom teacher, Sarah transitioned into the world of professional learning. In this role, Sarah has been able to support multiple school districts in developing aligned curriculum and providing professional learning opportunities for teachers. Through her role within her school district and at other various organizations, Sarah has been able to work towards helping teachers build a better understanding of aligned instructional materials and assist teachers as they transition to a collaborative classroom. Sarah holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with a minor in Chemistry from Whittier College, and is currently completing a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She is also a Master Scuba Diver Trainer and loves to go scuba diving in her free time.
Amy Jones-Lewis is the Director of Instructional Design at Carnegie Learning, where she manages a team of instructional designers in the creation and revision of print and software instructional materials. In roles at Carnegie Learning and Intermediate Unit 1, Amy has been developing and delivering teacher professional development across the country for 11 years. She began her career teaching high school mathematics in Malawi, Africa, and Baltimore City, Maryland and has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Johns Hopkins University.

Kozelnik, Sara
Prior to joining Carnegie Learning, Jami spent 13 years as a Secondary Math Coordinator, Mathematics Instructor, and Department Chair at Amphitheater Public Schools, AZ. She also spent six years in the private sector working as a chemist for Abbott Pharmaceuticals. Part of her experience as the Math Coordinator was working with the initial implementation of the Carnegie Learning curriculum and creating professional development to support collaborative classrooms.
Sara joined the Carnegie Learning Educational Services department in 2009. Her previous work on digitalACE, the Learning by Doing Awards, and MATHia Software Challenge programs provided her with the opportunity to partner with educators from around the country to collaborate on the use of technology to enhance the classroom experience for students and teachers. Currently, Sara is serving as Product Manager for MATHia X and is based out of Carnegie Learning headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA.

Martin Reynolds, Cassie
Peter is an educator with over 15 years of strategy, education and product development experience. Peter has led the redesign of a university, built new education programs, designed curriculum and worked within middle school and high school classrooms. At Carnegie Learning, the Product Management Team supports the development of amazing student and teacher-focused math products and services.
Cassie is a master facilitator and has substantial experience with classroom facilitation. Cassie was a Secondary Mathematics Instructor, Mathematics Coach, and Department Head at Warren East High School in Bowling Green, KY prior to joining Carnegie Learning. Cassie has managed several professional development projects as part of her daily work, including a GEAR UP grant where she collaborated with the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative in Bowling Green, KY, delivering math instructional coaching to seven districts across the state of Kentucky.

Ross, Shantel
Kristin joined the Carnegie Learning Ed Services department in 2010, after 10 years teaching middle school and high school mathematics. She also served as AVID team lead for mathematics, providing resources and support for at-risk students. Kristin is currently serving as Co-Project Director in the Miami-Dade School District, working with district leadership, administration, and teachers to ensure the successful Carnegie Learning curricula implementation of the DOE, Race to the Top Education Grant. When she is not working you will most likely find her enjoying the south Florida beaches and water activities.
Shantel works as a Certified Implementation Specialist for school districts in the Metropolitan Detroit Area. Prior to doing work for Carnegie Learning, Shantel provided coaching support to mathematics teachers in Wayne and Oakland County, Michigan. She has worked as a School Improvement Facilitator and Grant Coordinator and used the Carnegie resources and curriculum as a teacher and administrator. Shantel taught high school math, middle school math and has been a school administrator for over 17 years in the metropolitan Detroit area.

Saripali, Saradhi
Swissa, JiLL
Saradhi joined the Carnegie Learning Ed Services team in 2015 and has supported teachers across the country. Prior to joining Carnegie Learning, Saradhi worked as a middle school math teacher in rural Kentucky and urban Chicago, Illinois. He has utilized Carnegie resources in the classroom and supporting teachers with their implementations. In addition, Saradhi served as the Math Curriculum Director for a University of Chicago research project program spanning 15 Urban Chicago High Schools. Saradhi resides in Chicago, IL and is responsible for managing Carnegie Learning school relationships, primarily in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana. He has also been supporting Belleville, NJ and some of the surrounding schools in New Jersey.
JiLL joined the Carnegie Learning Ed Services team in 2013 and has supported teachers across the country. Prior to joining Carnegie Learning, JiLL worked as a High School Math Teacher in both New Jersey and Illinois. JiLL’s teaching experience ranges from small special education classes to large urban classrooms. She achieved great results facilitating low achieving students’ realization of success in mathematics. JiLL resides in Chicago, IL and is responsible for managing Carnegie Learning school relationships primarily in Illinois and Wisconsin.
