Dear Members The September newsletter always brings lots of news and information and this year is no different. The show season has been a busy one and show results are in the newsletter. The general comments from the judges have been to compliment exhibitors on the quality of the cattle coming into the show ring this year which is always very gratifying. The Winter Fairs season is fast approaching and the Society will have a stand at a number of events during the Autumn. Please come along with either your primestock or your moral support for those that are showing their stock at the Fairs up and down the country. A list of fairs is in the newsletter. Don’t forget to send me your advert for next year’s Journal. More information inside.

The Society is thriving and this success is in no small part due to a proactive and enthusiastic Council. There are four spaces on Council this year and I would encourage you to give serious consideration to standing for Council to contribute to the Society’s continuing growth and the breed’s burgeoning popularity. The Council nomination form is enclosed with this newsletter and must be back with me by Friday 24 September.

The Longhorn Cattle Society's National Show and Sale at Stoneleigh again attracted keen interest and spirited bidding from buyers travelling from across the country and peaking with a top bid of 2,700gns for the Overall Champion Southfield Jasmine 2nd’, a 19 month old daughter of Southfield Gangster out of Southfield Garnet, a Blackbrook K2 daughter, vendors David and Angela Blockley again producing a string of prize winners to compliment their Show Champion, purchaser was G. Hedges, Midgham, Reading, Berks. The Blockley's first prize Senior Heifer Southfield India, a January calver to Southfield Hawk also hit the 2,700gns mark again G. Hedges securing the buy. Cow and calves were hotly contested with Fishwick Hot Shot a second prize winner by Blackbrook Pirate with heifer calf at foot from Peter Close's herd topped at 2,400gns to A & JM Sheppard, Garway, Hereford. Messrs Sheppard made several purchases at the sale also taking Fishwick Diana, another cow with heifer calf at foot from Peter Close at 2,000gns and a Southfield Jute, a heifer by Blackbrook Newt carrying a blue rosette from D & A Blockley at 2,100gns. Bulls were closely followed, if somewhat selective however the Best Junior Bull Overdale Jockey from A Smith and by Wellhead Dynamo came home at a creditable 2,450gns to Anne Boston and Ivor Bayley, Rawnsley, Stafford. Auctioneer Clive Roads described the trade as "particularly buoyant for the top flight cattle" while buyers were also present to take cattle without a show rosette. Averages: 7 2 5 15 5 Auctioneers:

The Summer season of shows is starting to wind down now, with Southwell Ploughing Match on 25 September being the last show with Longhorn classes. Don’t forget to download and send in your Exhibitor Grant Support claim form from the website or ring me for a copy if you don’t have internet access. For those of you also doing the Winter Fairs you can claim after the last Fair which is Smithfield on 2nd and 3rd December, but in any case all claims MUST be received by 31 December 2010 in order to be paid.
A number of Longhorn Cattle Society have recently been nominated for, or have won National Awards. Longhorn Cattle Society members John Harrison and his daughter Ruth Russell of the Settrington Herd, North Yorkshire are National finalists in the RSPB’s ‘Nature Of Farming Awards’. They got through to the finals due to increased numbers of ‘key species’ birds on the farm, helped by their mixed farming policy and also by providing nesting habitat and planting bird seed areas etc. John and Ruth are well known for the conservation work they carry out alongside their commercial farming operations and have been the recipients of a number of conservation body awards over recent years. They also host an increasing number of school and groupv visits. Two Longhorn members have made it through to the finals of the Farmers Weekly Awards 2010. Jon Birchall is manager of the Offley Hoo herd belonging to Pilkington Farms, Offley, Herts. He is in the final three of the Countryside Farmer of the Year Award. Pilkington Farms are kindly hosting one of our farm visits for this year's AGM in November. Andrew Goodman has the Witley Herd of Longhorns in Worcestershire. His mother Judy is well known for her 'Goodman's Geese' brand. She has made it through to the final three of the Poultry Farmer of the Year Award. Panny Laing from the Logie herd, Morayshire, won a Gold in the Guild of Fine Foods Great Taste Awards 2010 for her Longhorn steak. Congratulations to everyone. If you have been in the awards spotlight recently do let me know and I’ll tell everyone via the newsletter and the website.

LONGHORN JOURNAL 2011 The Longhorn Journal for 2011 is currently being compiled and will be the showcase publication for the Longhorn breed next year. Advertising rates are published earlier in the newsletter and I would encourage you to take an advert to promote your herd. Many members get enquiries throughout the year due to their advert in the Journal so an advert lasts for at least 12 months, representing excellent value for money!
