Grants 2017-
Co-Principal Investigator (Eric Field, UVA, Co-Principal Investigator) New Delhi Walkability and Environment Study $10,000 from the University of Virginia School of Architecture This study establishes a web-based cognitive mapping methodology to collect behavioral and perceptual information about the experiences of travel in New Delhi, India. Working with community members to establish key issues in the environment of New Delhi, the data collected will allow spatial mapping and analysis of relationships between travel behavior, the environment, and personal well-being.
2017-
Co-Principal Investigator (Mona El Khafif, UVA, Co-Principal Investigator) Community-Centered Urban Sensing $10,000 from the University of Virginia School of Architecture This environmental sensing project engages community members in mapping of key features of the constructed environment. Beginning with light levels, geospatially accurate maps of nighttime lighting levels, along with other features, are associated with perceptual and photographic inputs from neighborhood residents. A web-based mapping and analysis tool provides rapid results to communities.
2017-
Co-Investigator (Ralph Buehler, VT, Principal Investigator) Planning for Walking and Cycling in an Autonomous Vehicle Future $45,500 from the Mid-Atlantic Transportation Sustainability University Transportation Center Through semi-structured interviews with transport experts from academia, local, regional, state, and federal levels of government, and the private sector, this research seeks to develop planning guidelines for walking and cycling during the transition towards an automated and connected vehicle (AV) fleet.
2016-2017
Principal Investigator Nature and Urban Walking: Comparing India and the United States $2,000 from the UVA Center for Global Innovation and Inquiry Cognitive mapping survey will capture how urban walkers balance access to utilitarian destinations such as work and shopping with proximity to nature. The study is an opportunity to better understand the motivations and benefits of walking across distinct cultures and environments in India and the US.
2016-2017
Principal Investigator Tysons Corner Walkability Study $5,000 Summer Research Funding for School of Architecture, University of Virginia Builds on previous work undertaken to collect user data through wearable sensors to map the possibilities of transforming the site into a more qualitatively healthy walkable

environment. Reframes decision making by pedestrians through community initiated studies of walkability or multimodal mobility. 2015-2016
Principal Investigator Road User Education for Multimodal Streets $30,000 from the Mid-Atlantic Transportation Sustainability University Transportation Center Addresses two key objectives: (1) identify best practices for using existing and new approaches to driver education to improve knowledge and acceptance of new, and (2) examine the impacts of education and habituation on road user knowledge, support, and use of new facilities.
2014-2015
Principal Investigator Virginia Sustainable Travel Choices $56,000 from the Mid-Atlantic Transportation Sustainability University Transportation Center Examines travel sustainability across Virginia, exploring differences among urban, suburban, and rural development and infrastructure across the state. Identifies trends related to sustainable travel and how they vary across the state, proposing what types of strategies and solutions are most appropriate for a given location.
2014-2016
Co-Principal Investigator (Brian Taylor, principal investigator) Accessibility and Economic Development: How the Transportation Network Affects the Economic Performance of Regions $85,000 from Haynes Foundation and $90,000 from UCCONNECT Investigates the relationship between traffic congestion, local mobility, and economic activity and productivity for several industries in Southern California and the Bay Area. The project establishes methods for analyzing the effects of congestion and alternative transportation choices on agglomeration effects.
2014
Principal Investigator Tysons Corner Built Environment Baseline and Travel Survey $3,000 Summer Research Funding for School of Architecture, University of Virginia Exploratory research using geolocated, wearable sensing devices including cameras, temperature sensors, and air quality sensors to catalog the built environment at Tysons Corner. In addition, deployed online survey of travel behavior and perceptions of the built environment at Tysons.
2013-2015
Co-Investigator ReProgramming Mobility $200,000 Grant from the Rockefeller Foundation Cataloged and analyzed the large and growing range of information and communication technologies directed toward transportation and mobility and assesses current and future impacts on transportation planning goals and processes. The project established several future scenarios for transportation planning and personal mobility based on current trends.
