FOREWORD TO THE 2006 REVISED INTERNET EDITION
In order to protect the privacy of living family members, their listings in this Internet Edition are confined to names without details of places and dates. If a reader would like a copy of the complete edition, please send your request to me at [email protected] This revised edition of the van Alderwerelt genealogy includes all corrections and additions that have been brought to my attention since the original edition was published in 1995. In addition, ongoing research in various archives has enabled me to add additional data for earlier generations. This genealogy now includes the branch that started at generation IIIa, Jan van Alderwerelt (1614-1682). This branch, which later received the title of baron/barones and changed its name to van Alderwerelt Houtuyn, died out in 1906. The Introduction that follows on page 5 has also been updated.

FOREWORD TO THE 1995 EDITION
The van Alderwerelt genealogy was last updated by my father, J.K.H. de Roo van Alderwerelt, in 1956 when it appeared in the 42nd edition of "Nederland's Patriciaat", also known as the "Blue Book", published in The Hague by Centraal Bureau voor Genealogy. It had been 40 years since it had appeared in the same publication in 1916. Now that almost another 40 years has gone by, it is fitting that another completely updated genealogy should be published. Several factors needed to be taken into account in deciding what format should be used. As so many members of the family now live in English speaking countries, it was felt appropriate to publish this version in English. In addition, children in most of the recent female lines of the family have been included so that this genealogy will perhaps be of more interest to them as well. While in the 1956 version full details were shown starting with generation II, this version shows full details starting with generation VI. It is not felt that any significant information is thereby omitted. Extensive research in earlier records in the United States has now made it possible to show complete du Bois van Alderwerelt information, as well as certain other information, which was not available in 1956. Through direct contact with a large number of family members in Europe, the United States and Canada, it was possible to include most current information for all branches. The cooperation received from everyone in providing such information is most appreciated. As with any work of this kind, errors and omissions can occur. If any readers do find that corrections need to be made or certain information needs to be added, I would hope that they contact me with particulars.

VAN ALDERWERELT VAN ALDERWERELT HOUTUYN VAN ALDERWERELT VAN ROSENBURGH DE ROO VAN ALDERWERELT
INTRODUCTION (Revised 2006) As early as 1490, an extensive family named van Alderwerelt lived in the area known as Flanders, particularly in the towns of Meenen, Werwick, Ypres, Ghent and Antwerp. All these towns are in what is now the Flemish part of Belgium with Meenen, Werwick and Ypres being very close to what is now the border between Belgium and France. The Reformation in the first half of the 16th Century led to the rise of various Protestant religions, and serious troubles arose between Catholics and Protestants. This was also a time of political upheaval, in that Spain attempted to exercise its authority over the area then known as the Spanish Netherlands, now consisting of the countries of The Netherlands and Belgium. The Spanish king was a strong supporter of the Catholic Church, and as towns in Flanders were conquered by Spanish troops, some of the Protestant inhabitants fled north to Holland, which had become a Protestant stronghold. The town of Meenen fell to the Spanish in 1578 while Ypres fell in 1584. Cornelis van Alderwerelt, a Protestant, and presumed to have been born in Meenen, moved north to The Netherlands about that time. He is most likely identical with "Cornelis van Al de werelt" who appears on a list, dated 10 February 1580, of Protestant church members in the Dutch town of Middelburg, province of Zeeland. His exact relationship to the van Alderwerelts who remained behind in Flanders remains unclear. However, around the year 1600 van Alderwerelts in Flanders and van Alderwerelts in Zeeland appear jointly in certain legal documents. To this day, there are a large number of van Alderwerelts, with a variety of different spellings, in Belgium and France and it is a reasonable assumption that they are all related. Cornelis van Alderwerelt, who died in 1605, was therefore the founder of the Dutch family van Alderwerelt. In 1614, his son Jan (1586-1637) purchased several building lots on the Herengracht, one of the main canals in Amsterdam when that city was being enlarged. He built several houses there, including the house "De Wereld" ("The World"), a house with a carved stone over the front entrance showing a globe with a cross on top. This stone was placed there in 1933 by the then owners of the building to commemorate the original builder, Jan van Alderwerelt.
Several branches of the Dutch family van Alderwerelt developed over time. Additions were made to the name to distinguish between these branches. Willem Pieter (17651837), fourth son of Joan Carel van Alderwerelt (1726-1791) and Alida Anna de Roo (1725-1785), added his mother’s name to his family name and so the name de Roo van Alderwerelt was created in 1789. It did not require specific legal action to change one’s name at that time. That requirement only came about in 1811. Members of this branch now live in The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Canada and the United States. Rugier (1754-1820), an older brother of Willem Pieter de Roo van Alderwerelt, did not change his name and therefore remained van Alderwerelt. His third son Rugier Pieter (1790-1860) married Catherina Wilhelmina du Bois (1788-1856). Their first son Otto Willem Isaak du Bois (1823-1910) was the first to receive the du Bois name as a given name; but no legal name change to create the family name du Bois van Alderwerelt ever took place, so legally they also remained van Alderwerelt. This branch died out when the last member died in the United States in 1985. Their second son, Rugier Pieter Magdalenus (1831-1895) received official permission in 1883 to change his name to van Alderwerelt van Rosenburgh and members of this branch now live in The Netherlands and England. Marinus Constantijn baron van Alderwerelt (1783–1871) received official permission in 1824 to change his name to van Alderwerelt Houtuyn. This branch died out in 1905. The genealogy that follows relies substantially on the version published in Nederland’s Patriciaat 1956 (The "Blue Book") and with respect to the titled branch van Alderwerelt Houtuyn on the version published in Nederland’s Adelsboek 1940 (The “Red Book”).
